Lift the score.

Tactical plays organized by ambition. Mix and stack — the +20 moves compound into +100 over a year.

+20PLAY 01

Pay statement balance before it cuts

Issuers report the statement balance, not the after-payment balance. Pay 2–3 days before the closing date so a low (or zero) balance reports — utilization drops without you spending less.

Request a credit limit increase

A higher limit, same balance = lower utilization. Use the issuer's app: most do a soft pull. Avoid bumping spend afterward.

Become an authorized user on a seasoned account

Piggyback on a clean, old card from a parent or partner. Confirm the issuer reports authorized users (Amex and Chase do; Apple Card does not).

Dispute every legitimate error

Pull all three reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Late marks reported in error, mixed files, and balance discrepancies are common — and removable. See the Dispute Lab.

Goodwill-letter a single isolated late payment

If you have one late on an otherwise clean account, write the issuer a short, sincere goodwill request. Higher hit rate at credit unions and store cards than at megabanks.

Pay-for-delete on collections under $500

Negotiate in writing: payment in exchange for full deletion (not just 'paid' notation). Get the agreement before sending money.

Add a Self / Credit Strong builder loan

Time + boring perfection

On-time, every time. Utilization low. No new applications. The single most underrated growth strategy is patience.

Sequencing matters.

  1. Week 1
Pull all three reports. Inventory accounts, balances, dates of first delinquency.
  2. Week 2
File disputes for any error. Request CLIs on cards held >6 months.
  3. Month 2
Pay statement balances early to drop reported utilization below 9%.
  4. Month 3
Send goodwill letters for isolated lates. Negotiate pay-for-delete on small collections.
  5. Month 6
If thin file, add a builder loan. Otherwise, sit on your hands.
  6. Month 12
Re-pull. Compare. Most files lift 40–80 points if the plan was followed.
